BACKSTROKE TIPS
.
1.  Learn the landmarks – know where you are in the pool – walk around the poolside before you race
2.  Keep the stroke long – stretch on entry – little finger first
3.  The underwater pull consists of three sweeps: a downsweep, an upsweep and then a downsweep
4.  The major problem for backstrokers is kicking too deep – be careful!
5.  Continuous arms – don’t rest when one arm is at your side
6.  World class backstrokers, almost without exception, use a six-beat leg kick
7.  Rolling your body is OK – but don’t roll your head
8.  Lift your shoulder, not your hand. Lifting your hand causes your shoulder to submerge
9. Breathing: Try inhaling on one arm recovery and exhaling on the other. This is good advice
10.  Don’t sit in the water – keep your hips high

Here are a few extra backstroke tips:
Body Posture

Horizontal body at the surface – keep it long and thin

Long neck

Keep the hips close to the surface

Head Position

Head in line with the spine = neutral position

Eyes looking at 12 o’clock

Head completely still

Keep the face relaxed

Stroke sequence and timing

Stay connected through your core

Left hand enters the water as the right hand is about to exit the water and vice versa

Breathe 1 in 2

Breathe in on one arm recovery and breathe out on the next recovery

Swimming Bags

Swimming Bags:

Swimming bags, I would recommend your club bag.

It is always good to have a club bag because you are supporting your club as well as financially, mentally it shows you are a team player and it looks good when you go to a gala and the whole squad had the same bag with there club on, it is also showing that you are “one” one team and one unit. I could also be advertising, if you are walking down the street to your training session and a want – to – be swimmer sees it they might want to join your club.

Swimming Goggles

Goggles

Goggles are the hardest item of equipment to buy, I am suck with my maru pair nothing could be better or even equal too my maru goggles in my opinion. They are perfect in every possible way, they do not get blurry, they are tinted so in out door pools and in the summer the sun does not hurt my eyes. I wear them to training, races and even take them on holiday with me and so easy to adjust. I have had my mirror pulse maru goggles now for two years and unlike most goggles I can see out of them now the same as on the first day I got them. However these goggles fit me, but this may not be the case for you reading this now, you might need a small nose bridge or bigger eye sockets or curved around goggles, you get my drift. What I am trying to say is it is so hard to find goggles that fit your face so when you do find them buy lots so if they go out of stock and you lose them you have back up. Another tip it is better if you try on the goggles. If you see a really lovely pair on Maru’s website or Speedo’s website or swim shop’s website find a friend or member of your swimming club with them goggles and ask to try them on. If they are good there is high chance someone will have them.   By Olivia.

Swimming Costumes

Hi my name is Olivia, during my swimming time I have had quite a few training and racing swimming costumes to stay the least. This is my advice for training swimming costumes to get the most for your money. My top costume is an Uglies. Starting from £15 admitally it is fairly expensive, but a regular Uglies costume could potentially last one whole year. I train five days a week for 1 hour in my much loved Uglies costume. In the last year I have had three Uglies costumes and I could still be wearing the first costume now which is still like new. The only reason I changed my costume is because fashion had moved on and they had a new really pretty collection.

I also love their drag shorts collection. I got a pair for Christmas this year, so unfortunately it would not be fair to give a full report of these as I have only owned a pair for a couple of weeks now. However from the time I have had to swim in them they are great. They go fantastically with my Uglies costume and fit me perfectly after I tie a bow in them. A fabulous buy.
