Now that is interesting…….

Swimming has been in the Olympics since 1896. The strokes were freestyle and breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

1940’s was when breaststroker’s found out that you can be faster if you bring both arms over the top of the water together. This was then banned, but because the butterfly stroke, which is now the 4th swimming stroke used in competitions.

Stuff you need to know about competitive swimming:

  1. Tumble turns: a forward roll, allowing the swimmer to push of the wall (end of the pool) and go to do another length. You cannot do tumble turns in an IM (If you do a backwards tumble from back to breast, then this does not count), breaststroke and butterfly.
  2. Diving: For breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle you dive from the blocks. Only for backstroke you dive by holding the handles on the block, starting already in the water.
  3. Negative split: A race strategy, where a swimmer swims the second half of the race faster than the first half.
  4. The flags: Used when doing backstroke. When you see the flags you count how many arm strokes it is until you touch the wall, minus one arm stroke, and this allows you to tumble turn. The flags also indicate how far away from the wall, it is normally 5m. The flags are 5m from each end of the pool, two on each end.

Did you know?

Underwater Swimming first came about in the Paris 1900 Games. Competitors earned points for the length of time and distance they were underwater.

Johnny Weissmuller, the first man to swim 100 metres in under a minute, was just as famous out of the pool. He helped save the lives of 11 people when a boat capsized on Lake Michigan, and also played the role of Tarzan in films.

Swimming Tips

Swimming Tips 1 - stretching is one of the most important warm ups for swimmers. If you do not stretch you could pull a muscle and not be able to swim or worse so it is very important stretch. It is also very import because it warms up your muscles as you can perform better in training and a race.

Swimming Tips 2 - your mind-set at a gala is more important than how you swim. you will swim as good as you want you are thinking. if you are thinking: “oh my god I am swimming up against her and I am going to lose.” you are going to lose, make a fall of your self swim rubbish and not get a PB. However if you think this: I am swimming agents her, great I can show every one that I can bet her. Than you are you to win, and get a lot of praise. Which one are you going to choose?

Swimming Tips 3 – Watch older swimmers, as there is always room for improvement in your swimming. Really study their stroke and try it in your next swimming session, if is work (makes you swim faster) great, use it as often as possible. However, if it does not work do not be disheartened and find another technique that better suits you or ask the swimmer how to do it properly.

Swimming Tips 4 - drink lots of  water while you are swimming, you do not want to dehydrate. half the time you do not even know you are dehydrated, so it is very important to drink lots while you are swimming.

Swimming Tips 5 - Remember to relax and have fun. If all you are worried about is your times and your technique then you are no longer enjoying being in the water. Have fun is the main thing, after all it is your hobbie.

Swimming Tips 6 – Blow bubbles, blowing bubbles is an easy breathing technique. It may sound silly but, it works great.

Swimming Tips 7 – For your dive, push-off the block as hard as you can with your feet.

Swimming Tips 8 – Before you practice swimming faster, practice perfecting your technique. It is the perfect technique that must work with speed to win the competitions.

Swimming Tips 9 - If you lose a race do not be disheartened, come back fighting, if you lose your race, win the next one do not get upset about it, if you have tried your best then there is nothing you can do about it apart from put in 150% into your training and by your next race you will be unbeatable.

Swimming Tips 10 - In a race it will make you swim faster if you reduce you’re breathing; on the other hand do not stop it all together as that is dangerous. Aim to do about ten breaths in 25m front crawl.

Swimming Tips 11 - Don’t forget to “warm down” after swim training, to let your boay recover. Studies have shown warming down also decreases sudden heart attacks due to over-training.

Swimming Tips 12 - I would recommend you to buy: A kick flot, pull flot, hand paddles and flippers, to help you improve in your kick and pulling skills. Please look under equipment, to see my personal review of these items.

Swimming Tips 13 - Make the most out of your race, use every pull and kick to its full potantal, swim as hard as possible and give it your all.

Swimming Tips 14 - When you swim backstroke you must keep your head still! If you move your head your body will follow and you will be swimming up the pool in a zig zag.

Swimming Tips 15 - Butterfly is the hardest stroke so don’t get discouraged if it’s too hard. One of the things that can help is if you make sure you keep your arms straight and get your head down.

Swimming workout

Many doctors and athletes agree that swimming is one of the best workouts you can give your body. Swimming works almost all of your major muscle groups at the same time. Because you are not in contact with any  hard surfaces (like when you do gymnastics) there’s less pressure on your joints and bones. This reduces the chances of you suffering certain kinds of injuries than with other sports.

Here are some swimming facts:

1. In swimming the reason why you don’t sweat or get hot and stick is because the water lowers you body tempreture.

2. Swimming is a skill that could save your life or help you save someone else’s life in an emergency.

3. Swimming regularly can help build muscle mass and reduce body fat.

4. In swimming, you can choose to specialize in a certain kind of stroke (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly or Individual medley (a mixture of all strokes).

5. If you are not good at pulling or kicking a kickboard, hand paddles, pull buoy, or flippers can help you to improve.

6. Swimming goggles protect your eyes from the chlorine in the water. They also help you to see underwater more clearly. To cause less chance of them leaking they must not be too tight, but not too loose either.

Below are some points for you to think about while you train. Pick one before each training session and practise from the beginning of warm up to the end of the swim down. There are lots more – add your own page of “training points to think about”.

1. Think about stroke technique

2. Streamline every start, push off and turn

3. Take two strokes out of every start or turn before breathing on fly and frontcrawl.

4. Finish each repeat as if it were a race finish

5. Do all stroke drills 100% right

6. Go beyond the flags out of every turn

7. Leave on time for every training repeat

8. Look at the clock at the start and finish of every repeat

9. Count strokes at regular intervals

10. Touch with two hands on all Fly and Breaststroke lengths

11. Work on fly kicks out of the frontcrawl tumble turn

12. Practise turning both ways on all strokes

13. Go to the toilet only between sets

14. Work on the distance you kick backstroke under water every start and turn.
