Do you have any swimming problems or a bad habits? If yes then look below and find the cure to all your problems.

Problem: 

“When I am swimming front crawl I can never stay in a straight line.”

Cure:

In most cases, swimmers move their head wildly when they are trying to swim fast. Your body follows your head, so if you move your head wildly then your body will move wildly too, stopping you from swimming straight. You must keep your head still at all times!  

Problem:

“When I am swimming butterfly I can’t get my arms over the water.”

Cure:

When swimming butterfly you must keep your head down. This will help you get your arms over the water and you will swim even faster.  It also helps your arms clear the water when you get a rhythm and flow which you continue throughout the race or training session.

Problem:

“I keep getting stitches during my swimming sessions.”

Cure:

You tend to get stitches through not breathing enough. So Get a breathing pattern and stick to it. In my training sessions I breathe  every three strokes. However in galas I breathe as least as possible because it does not matter if I get a stitch in a race which will last only a couple of minutes.

Hair Care.

I decided to do a post about hair care because as a girl swimmer with long hair myself I used to find that my hair after swimming used to be in a horrific state full of horrible knots and I wanted to share with you how to stop this.

Olivia’s hair care tips:

1.) Always wash your hair after swimming with shampoo and conditioner.   

2.) Make sure all the chlorine is out of your hair before leaving the shower. (You can do this by smelling your hair. If it smells just like your conditioner you put on then you can get dressed, however If it smells like the swimming pool, you need to stay in the shower for another five minutes.)

3.) If you have a fringe (full fringe.) Dry it with a hair dryer while it is still wet. Sometimes when you sleep with your head down and you have not dried your fringe, it will go flat and out of shape until you next wash it.

4.) When you wash your hair do not be tight with the conditioner. It is the conditioner that stops the knots and tangles so put lots on.

5.) Buy a Tangle Teezer hair brush! It is the best brush in the whole world! Once you get one you will never want to use a normal brush again. I can not recommend this amazing brush to you enough. I have two at home a Pink and Black one, a couple of months after I bought this fabulous brush I tried a normal brush and the pain was immense. The tangle teezer runs throw the knots and tangles quickly and painlessly. Also they last forever! Below is a photo of a Tangle Teezer and the link to their official website:

Equipment Care

We always wash out our costumes / drag shorts after swimming and let them dry naturally, this will help prolong the life of your costumes.

Tip: after your swim put your costume into a waterproof plastic inside your swim bag and do not wrap your costume in your towel.

Also it is wise to wash out your swimming cap, we find that after a while it becomes slippery and keeps falling off, just wash it under the tap and add a little talcum powder.

After a while swimming goggles can lose thier anti fog coating, if your goggles are still in good condition you can buy a small bottle of anti fog spray and recoat your goggle lenses. Be careful not to scratch the inside of the lenses.

One more little tip, why not wash off your float / kick board in the showers, this will stop that horrible smell being left in your car when the float is left in the boot / trunk (USA..:o)) of your car.

Keep your coach happy… 

1. All turns to be legal during training (Two-handed touch on fly and breaststroke)

2. Please arrive at the pool on time. 10 minutes before the start of the session is fine.

3. When you feel happy – share it. If you wear a smile – pass it around

4. If coach hasn’t made something clear to you, please ask – don’t guess

5. Don’t overdo it. Pace your session sensibly 

6. If the swimmer behind you touches your toes – give way graciously. Fastest swimmers at the front of the lane please

7. If coach corrects your stroke – see it as help, not criticism

8. If you have a problem, don’t keep it to yourself, nothing is that important

9. When training hurts, remember to smile at your coach. If he thinks you are enjoying yourself he’ll feel much better!

DO THINGS PROPERLY- ALL THE TIME!  

Okay, swimmers, I’ll give it to you straight! This stuff isn’t rocket science, but it is often ignored. So, establish these good habits early, refresh them often and revisit them if you’re not getting what you want.
Show that you care Firstly, get to the pool, and look keen. Demonstrate to your coach and others that you care about your swimming and take it seriously by being on time, rarely missing training and not leaving early. These may seem obvious, but they can’t be, given the numbers of swimmers who don’t do so.
Take part  Speak up. Make yourself a valuable club member by contributing whenever and wherever you can. If you have something valuable to say, then say it. Take part in team activities. If your club organises a disco, skittle-night or quiz evening – get there and join in. You may also set an example to those who remain quiet and those who swim ‘anonymously’ in a club session. Be a part of the team. Positive relationships make work more enjoyable and help you get things done. Look at this: Most swimmers want to be respected. You can choose to respect them regardless of their education or swimming ability. The relationships you build will encourage others to support you and make them more willing to help you when you’re going through a rough patch. You will also earn respect by showing it to others.
The choice is yours Remember, you have a choice each day about your attitude. Choose to be a positive swimmer. Steer clear of those who are negative and drain your energy. Learn quickly and train well. Aim to improve the quality of your swimming every time you go to a session. Understand how you contribute to the success of your team then find ways to become more valuable.
It’s simple  Listen! Learning to really listen will set you apart from the rest. You will find that people gravitate to those who are good listeners. Listening will help you to swim faster. It is as simple as that! And by listening, you’ll learn something that most of the other swimmers will miss.
Stand up and be counted. Be clear about what you want to get out of swimming. Swimmers who are honest, and willing to work for the good of the team are valued in swim clubs. Show that your attitude is good, and that you are willing to contribute more as an individual and as a team member. Giving credit to others when it is due earns gratitude and respect. Honest swimmers are a great asset in a club. Finish well! Complete the session. Do it properly but don’t do simply what is expected of you. Do more and you’ll move into the top 5 percent of swimmers anywhere.
If you are educated, intelligent and have a little natural ability, you will do well in swimming. But remember, to reach the very top you will have to do things properly…all the time!
